Mid July Fishing: Pookie Time

If you haven’t fished the pookie yet, you probably should try it out your next day on the water. Hoppers have been seen in large numbers in the grass along all our rivers out here. The Pink Pookie is a go- to for us, but we could be a little bias… We have also been doing very well fishing a small yellow hopper pattern. Ant’s and beetles are also great choices right now. A green perdigon dropper has also been very effective (varying depths of dropper depending on water)

We have been seeing lots of caddis hatching on the Yellowstone River the past few weeks, so any elk hair pattern and or hares ear nymphs are all great fly choices right now. Green drakes have been sporadically hatching too.

As things get hotter, a great way to beat the heat is to drive into Yellowstone National Park. The rivers up there are still very cold in the Yellowstone drainage. Lamar river is fishing well in the valley, a hopper and a parachute adams is all ya need there.

DEPUYS: The past couple reports from the spring creeks have been what you would expect for 90 plus degree heat with bright sunshine. Right now some PMDs are still hatching, and you will probably find fish midgeing out there as well. It is also a great time of year to fish terrestrials on the creek. A black cricket is always a good place to start there..

The main river near Livingston has been heating up to almost 70 degrees this past week, so we have been seeing a lot of boats getting out earlier in the morning. Probably a smart decision. Please take care of the trout out there, and avoid over handling when possible! Keep em wet!!
